School Segregation in Western North Carolina

School Segregation in Western North Carolina explores the regional history of segregated education from Reconstruction through integration, detailing the struggles and triumphs of communities determined to overcome underfunded, under-resourced black schools.

The focus is on achievements, as well as failures, and the long process involved in fighting for educational equality. The author examines topics such as the establishment and improvement of black schools, personnel issues, curriculum, extracurricular activities, and the eventual push for desegregation. While highlighting obstacles faced by African American communities, such as lack of funding, inadequate resources, and a significant lack of supplies, this book highlights the Black communities’ fight to improve their schools and to achieve integration.
